This workshop will offer information, demonstrations and practical ideas for adapting visual art and music offerings for students with disabilities. Participants will leave with a greater understanding of accommodations (meeting the particular needs of the student within the activity) and modifications (changing the activity to meet the needs of the student) for students with disabilities. This workshop is open to all but is targeted toward school-based teachers and teaching artists.
Participants of this workshop will:
– Review differentiated instruction, modifications and accommodations
– Explore various tools and strategies that can assist teachers and teaching artists
– Leave with creative ideas to use in your classroom or art/music setting

Workshop Instructors
Paula Scicluna is a board-certified neurologic music therapist with 30 years of clinical experience working with children and adults challenged with developmental, neurological and mental health disorders. She is the executive director of Rhythm and Rehab providing private music therapy services in the Triangle.Paula has completed the advanced fellowship level training with the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy at the Center for Biomedical Research in Music at Colorado State University. As a classically-trained pianist, she has a passion for the therapeutic benefits of adapted piano training. She is an internationally published author on music and sensory integration in neurorehabilitationand an experienced presenter for conferences and workshops.
Michelle Davis Petelinz is a painter, award winning mixed media artist and educator, with experience teaching children of all abilities and adults with disabilities. Michelle graduated from Wellesley College with a B.A. in Art History, which she now uses to teach her original art curriculum at Life Experiences and Wake Enterprises — day programs for adults with disabilities — and at Sertoma Arts Center. Michelle is the owner of Kindred Spirit Studios where she creates mixed media wall art and art-to-wear jewelry.
Betsy Ludwig has been with Arts Access since 2010. She has over 25 years experience working with children and adults with disabilities. She has worked as a social worker, recreation therapist, educator/ trainer and non-profit administrator at UNC-Chapel Hill, Durham Public Schools, NC Autism Society, NC Central University and Community Partnerships. She has a BA in Sociology from Salem College and an MS in Therapeutic Recreation from UNC-Chapel Hill and completed Arts Management coursework at NYU. She loves the arts and is passionate about making the arts and cultural life of North Carolina more accessible and equitable!
